Charrettes

Charrettes are focused, collaborative design sessions that bring project teams, stakeholders, and subject matter experts together to explore possibilities, test assumptions, and align around an inclusive experiential design direction. PAC uses charrettes to help organizations move complex accessibility and inclusion questions out of abstraction and into active design work, where ideas can be examined, challenged, refined, and translated into practical next steps.

These sessions can support early concept development, exhibition and experience planning, interpretive strategy, environmental design, visitor journeys, digital and physical touchpoints, service models, wayfinding, sensory access, content delivery, and other elements that shape how people participate in an experience. Because charrettes are intensive, multidisciplinary workshops, they are especially useful when many teams or areas of responsibility need to work together around a shared design challenge.

PAC facilitates charrettes through an inclusive design lens, helping teams consider how people with different bodies, senses, technologies, languages, cultural contexts, expectations, and access needs may encounter the experience. The goal is not simply to generate ideas, but to pressure-test them: what assumptions are being made, whose participation is being supported, where barriers may emerge, and how different design, operational, digital, and interpretive decisions can work together as a coherent experience.

Depending on the project, charrettes may include guided discussion, scenario development, journey mapping, review of drawings or concepts, rapid ideation, critique of proposed interactions, identification of access affordances, prioritization of design opportunities, and documentation of next steps. The result is a more aligned project team, a clearer understanding of inclusive design priorities, and a stronger foundation for developing experiences that are accessible, equitable, and meaningful from the outset.
